Tarot of Brass and Steam Review

Post by kare »

Hi,

I just wanted to share a gorgeous Steampunk tarot deck I purchased on Amazon. It comes from a Kickstarter and is sold on Amazon by the deck creator who also has a deck website http://www.brassandsteam.com/index.html where you can purchase the full-size version of the guidebook. If you get the deck and book on the site, you get a discount. The deck comes with a LWB. The full- size version includes full color images of the card artwork, the names of the artists for each piece, and the special edition includes additional images of art that was not used. I emailed the deck creator, and he was responsive and signed my copy of the book.

This deck is serious steampunk. It has a full backstory to the universe represented in the cards, and this detail and richness in the setting and characters shows. It is one of the most diverse decks I've seen as well, and has compelling interpretations of the majors.

The deck is borderless, large, and of good card stock. It has original art for the majors, courts and aces. The pips are an image of the ace with a number superimposed. Art for each pip was a stretch goal of the kickstarter that was not met. But the ace art is rich and all things considered, the pips are nicely done. For me, having a number to focus on instead of a scene reminds me of the fact that the cards occur in a progression and are inherently linked to the card before and after. It's a bummer they didn't meet the stretch goal because the narrative quality of this deck is unlike any I've encountered, and there would definitely have been adventures to be had. It is worth it for the art and quality and uniqueness of the treatment of the subject matter. I love the deck.
