Tarot de Besançon

Post by Scanner »

Dear all,

does anybody know if there is any available edition of the Tarot de Besançon?

It's a Tarot similiar to the TdM which replaced the positions of the Papess (II) and Pope (V) by the Roman Gods Jupiter/Juno (but some other little differences exist).

As far as I know, at the moment there is only a Tarot from Switzerland that is a reproduction of the TdB. Ist Name is the "Tarot 1 JJ".

Can someone help?

The deck being sold on Etsy is extremely rare, hence the price.

I suggest:

Il Tarocco di Besançon, Il Meneghello

Tarocchi di Besançon Miller, Rinascimento - Giordano Berti

These are harder to find:

Tarot d'Epinal/Pellerin et Cie - Arts et Lettres, France (French Titles only) - J .M. Simon (French/English Titles)

Tarot de Besançon - Pablo Robledo

Vandenborre - Pablo Robledo
Rocket Raccoon: Blah, Blah, Blah.....

@ Papageno,

thank you for your answer - it helped me very much.
One question: Is there a file with the Besancon Cards? I'm considering to let the cards print by an online shop. It would be much more easier.

Yes, there is, there are a number available on the BNF website, Gallica: here for instance, or for the deck pictured above, see here.

Honestly,
I'm not sure which one is more beautiful, being torn between both decks.
The first one looks so ancient and the second has a more powerful style, although the notes on it bother me a little bit..

Did you notice that the eyes of Cupido on the Lovers Card (VI) from the last link you've posted are not covered in contrast to earlier versions?
I wonder why :?:

This is because the Arnoult deck is, aside from Juno and Jupiter, a "Marseilles Type II" deck, and not a Besançon as such. If the figures seem familiar, it is because Arnoult also produced another deck, with Pope and Popess, which became the prototype of the Marteau-Grimaud deck.

The one you pictured from Etsy was from published by Grimaud. This one that I just finished restoring was the earlier version, the Lequart Arnoult, that was done through the 1880s. It was produced by before Grimaud purchased the Lequart publisher in 1891. I just got the proofs back. Jupiter. Juno. Bloody swords. Bearded angel. Unique colors. What more could you want?

You can get it here on Etsy.
