Using only the Majors in RWS decks that disappoint

Post by Papageno »

For myself, Modern Spellcaster's Tarot is one of the few decks that fall in this category.

Melanie Marquis has the presence of mind to provide thought-provoking card interpretations in the accompanying book that's included in this beautifully published boxed set, mercifully sparing us of the usual tired and recycled rote "meanings" and bland LWB nonsense.

Scott Murphey's artwork is razor-sharp, dynamic, and provocatively brilliant, at least the Majors are.

From a personal perspective, the Minors are episodic and somewhat strangely depicted, resulting in a body of work that almost loses cohesion in the narrative. I've actually separated the Majors from the Minors into 2 sets, and never again the twain shall meet.

I think some (if not many) artists focus all their energy on the Majors and then struggle with the Minors, with varying degrees of success.
Maybe it's an issue of publishing deadlines, creative exhaustion, or both.

Does anybody else have decks you feel this way about?

So I don't really like to necropost old topics, but this one I thought was worth revisiting because it holds special interest for me.

My first deck, the Dali Tarot, has minors that I think are just abysmal. I couldn't wrap my head around them when I first started (years ago, in 1988). Because of this, I read Majors only for years. I didn't even look at the minors in this deck. It wasn't until later, when I received as a gift a standard RWS, that I started looking at the rest of the deck. At this point I learned that Dali possibly didn't even design the minors in the Dali! I don't look at this negatively at all. It really forced me to concentrate on the Majors first and definitely influenced my reading style in a positive way.

Necroposting (new word to me- love it) is highly encouraged here.

So many great topics get missed, or in the early days when there weren't as many people to comment, that I personally think it's great to see them re-animated!

So, Necropost away!
