Selling Your Indie Deck Through Metaphysical Shops

Post by Joan Marie »

(If you are seeing this post it is because you have been added to the Deck Creator's Group. Only Deck Creators have access to this area of the forum.)

I recently attended a workshop about how to help your deck sell well in metaphysical shops.
I wrote a post about it in the regular part of the forum.

The surprising thing to me was just how successful these stores are, despite the decline of other types of "brick and mortar" stores. The times are just right for these kind of shops and for a lot of reasons. Some information I put in my other post and some you can read in this article from The Wild Hunt pagan news magazine. (You can skim past the beginning of the article, further in they start to describe what it is about these stores that are making them so popular now)

In the workshop I attended I learned that these shops move a ton of tarot decks of all kinds. And I learned about some of the things that help them move.

One of the most basic things is the box of course. She said though that the trend now is away from tuck boxes and toward more solid types and that one important factor to consider is how it will look (and how steady it will be) standing upright on a shelf in a store. Tuck boxes are just too small and are not as impressive to buyers as some of the newer types of boxes that are coming out.

I have to admit, it was all new to me. I really hadn't considered this as a way to sell decks as an independent publisher. I really thought only the big guys got into stores but I was wrong. She buys decks all the time from Indie creators, pays up front too.

When I was recently traveling in the US, I stopped in to several shops in different cities and I was amazed at what I saw. Especially on a Saturday or Sunday these stores were just buzzing with activity. And they had great selections of decks. And I saw what she meant about how they look on display.

There were many other things that I will add to this post, other tips she gave to make your decks move off the shelves, but I want to ask if any of you sell your decks through these shops and wondering if maybe you could share some of your experience with it.

One other interesting thing is, it's no surprise that in larger cities these shops do well, but in smaller towns and cities, these shops are central headquarters for the community of people into Tarot and crystals and all the other things these shops deal in. They hold events and have readers come in. These shops become a real haven for people in smaller communities, and they all know each other and they share all information, like which new tarot decks they want/have/recently bought.
