The Cardinal Virtues in Tarot

Post by Rachelcat »

I just gave a presentation to my tarot society today on the cardinal virtues, so I thought I'd share it here.

A good thing about Zoom meetings, besides allowing long distance attendance, is the ability to show and tell many more cards and decks, via PowerPoint, than I can in by handing them around in an in-person meeting.

Here is my presentation with notes. The notes are a little note-y, but I hope they get the info across.

Please discuss with me or amongst yourselves!

I love the spread. Your own creation?

I certainly agree that the Hanged Man is not suitable candidate for "Prudence". I get the High Priestess/Papessa connection - Latin prudentia: foresight, sagacity. The Hermit gets a mention occasionally. Possible, but I'd sooner go with HP. But the signature halos in the Estensi deck definitely seem to point to the World. Nigel Jackson even adds in a snake (asclepian style) in his Dame Fortune's Wheel version. Plus the World is my favourite card, so I'm good with that! 😉

Thanks! Making up spreads is kind of my hobby. I'm glad you like it. The positions are based on the cardinal signs in an astro chart.

It was Robert Place's books that finally convinced me Prudence is the World, not the Priestess. I hate it when he's right. And he's ALWAYS right! And then the different Greek words for different kinds of wisdom, that I came across in a philosophy book, finally helped me accept it.

Thanks for chiming in!
