Tarot & Magical Plants
As part of an ongoing investigation into the “medical Tarot”, here’s an intriguing idea by the French poet-occultist Stanislas de Guaita, namely, that the trumps are connected to the magical Chaldean herbs . I haven't seen that particular theory floated anywhere else before, although I know there ar...

Re: Paul Marteau (Grimaud) Biography
While an English translation of Marteau’s book is certainly a desideratum, you ought to be aware that it is still under copyright for another 15 years, that is, until 2036, since the relevant law in this respect is life + 70 years.

Re: Fascinating Deck from the BNF
Do you know what D'Allemagne means by " l'oeil indien?" Is there a specific term of art in use, or is he saying something about the way the eyes of the faces look? Thanks for sharing; this looks like a fascinating source in general. All of the revolutionary era tarots I have seen have bee...

Re: Fascinating Deck from the BNF
There were a bunch of so-called revolutionary decks, usually modified older decks. You can see some other examples on Gallica. D’Allemagne gives the briefest of descriptions: https://archive.org/details/McGillLibra ... 3/mode/2up

This is a timely topic as I have just been translating a short article on the Tarot and the Chaldean herbs, and I look forward to learning more about these decks too.

As I recall, the distinction being made, in the case of the suits numbered to the sides, is that of looking from the inside out, and from the outside in.

Re: CBD?
Hi all, did anybody notice that the coin suit is the only suit in CBD tarot which is not numbered? The cups are numbered although it's easy to count them. It's more difficult to count the Swords and Batons.. Wonder what Conver exactly thought he is doing.. Yes, Tchalaï made this observation in her ...

Re: Tarot de Marseille/Zodiac/mapping
I am not sure I understand what the question is exactly, but Tarot cards have been mapped to geographical regions (Court de Gébelin) and to constellations (Moreau de Dammartin), as well as to the cardinal directions, the seasons and the calendar, among other things.

The author was no stranger to cartomancy, having visited a bunch of Parisian fortune-tellers and written about the experiences afterwards. Whether he based the poems themselves on some pre-existing divinatory meanings though, I cannot say for certain.

EST = export stamp.
[Edit: not because of the initials; "est" is short for "l'éstranger" i.e. abroad.]

Isis and the Myth of the Egyptian Tarot
Following on from the earlier article on the translations of the founding documents of the occult Tarot by Court de Gébelin and Etteilla, I have published a study on the origins of the Egyptian myth of the Tarot, which may interest those who enjoy history, myth and other enigmas. The article may be ...

Court de Gébelin / Etteilla Translations
It might interest some readers to know that a period manuscript translation of the essays by Court de Gébelin, the Comte de Mellet, along with most of Etteilla’s Cahiers has recently been digitised and placed online on a library website. For those interested in these historical texts (or Etteilla’s ...

Re: Total noob here
Essentially, the criteria which determine whether a deck is a Tarot deck or something else are largely structural: a Tarot pack contains 78 cards divided into five suits, including one suit of 22 trumps. The imagery and sequence of the cards has varied a little in history, but is now more or less fi...

The building in the painting is the one situated at the apex of Place Dauphine, right at the centre of the Pont Neuf, the first bridge to the bottom.
