Re: Special Announcement about Cult of Tarot
Thank you for all the hardwork over the last four years (it seems like longer to me) and I completely understand why you might feel the need to step away and do something else. Still, it's sad, we need more places for (intelligent or otherwise) Tarot discussion, not less. CoT will be missed. Just th...

Re: Consuming the Tarot
This is such an interesting thread. I love your point about target-oriented goals vs speculative conversation! That really nails it. Speculation is so generative and rich and I find so many ideas there. And a finite object such as a blog post or book essay is very different as you say. I think peopl...

Re: Consuming the Tarot
What interesting thoughts. I am rather shocked and surprised at the idea of any Tarot related disagreement, no matter how heated, degenerating to the level of death threats, police involvement, et cetera. It's certainly not something I've come across, and those who have been on the receiving end of ...

Re: Archetypes Rant
I think Jung viewed archetypes in a very different way to most modern Tarot readers, seeing them as unconscious, instinctual drives and primitive, even animalistic, states of mind, a collective unconscious that lies beneath the family and cultural content of one's personal unconscious. Here, the col...

Re: Past Life Readings For Fun Or Profit
This gave me a good chuckle. The Tarot really has a way to give you the answers you need, even if they're not what you expect! Yeah, I've come to see the Tarot as being a little like those cranky Zen masters that are always jumping out from behind corners and hitting their students with sticks. :)

Re: Past Life Readings For Fun Or Profit
Despite saying he doesn't like doing them, Andy Boroveshengra had a good past life spread on his blog a while back.... but I think it's been pulled, unfortunately. Years ago, with a spirit of adventure and no expectations, I did a no-spread past life reading for a friend, asking what event in a prev...

Re: Lon Milo DuQuette: The Man We Want to Hang With
Sorry to leave this wonderful reply hanging for so long. I've been busy digging a bunker, whittling crossbow bolts and stocking up on baked beans. i've lost the thread, here - how is the problem of the source of evil overcome, exactly? it sounds a little ex-cathedra - 1) god is not logical, therefor...

Re: Tarot and the elements of fire and air
That aside, I will note that at least one author has pointed out that since there are in fact five suits of cards, should we not be looking for a "fifth element"? He conveniently finds this set of five in the traditional Chinese concept of the Five Phases (rather than 'elements'), justifi...

Re: Lon Milo DuQuette: The Man We Want to Hang With
what would be it's place? in ritual? perhaps the question is: who would it serve? if not god, then it must be there for the one interceding, for the people outside to witness, or for the evil spirit if one believes in such things. as far as prayer goes, i've always felt it's not a prescription for ...

Re: exit, pursued by light-bearer
Nope, no need for intercession for healing. I swear. I didn't say intercession was needed. Just that it has its place. what would be it's place? in ritual? perhaps the question is: who would it serve? if not god, then it must be there for the one interceding, for the people outside to witness, or f...

Re: A Maison Dieu XVI is not a Tower
To slightly rephrase my second comment: How does knowing that the Tower of Babel myth is an "etiological story of how human languages differentiated and evolved" help me to engage with the world, learn to love, run a farm, build a friendship, a community, etc. ? I might jump in. It seems ...

Re: Lon Milo DuQuette: The Man We Want to Hang With
Nope, no need for intercession for healing. I swear. I didn't say intercession was needed. Just that it has its place. No, the darkness is not bad. Nor is the light good for that matter. The darkness is the stillness. And in that stillness one can hear the Still Small Voice that thunders like a lio...

Re: A Maison Dieu XVI is not a Tower
Back to Babel for a second: Isn't there an extra-biblical legend that does involve destruction and the tower's supposed architect, Nimrod, being thrown from its heights? This has popped up in art and literature. So, even if Babel has nothing to do with the original intent of card 16, it could be tha...

Re: Lon Milo DuQuette: The Man We Want to Hang With
One cannot know what God is. No description is possible. Lao Tseu described this beautifully when he said : "The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao; the name that can be named is not the eternal name." However, through mystical practices, one can know the NATURE of God. But that'...

Re: cleansing the deck
I'm pretty sure that people are using the term 'energy' in a metaphorical sense when they talk of negative energies, cleansing, etc. So I'm not sure how much light the contemporary laws and theories of physics can throw on the matter. Anyway, I don't cleanse my decks. But I have had enough personal ...

Re: Lon Milo DuQuette: The Man We Want to Hang With
Talking of insanity, surely we have to differentiate between transcendent experiences that are integrative and those of a dis-integrative and destructive nature. Huxley, in Heaven and Hell, noticed the line to be, on the one hand, rather thin, yet, at the same time, of vast, day and night, importan...

Re: Lon Milo DuQuette: The Man We Want to Hang With
This made me think of a fallen angel (the first part of the quoted post. The second part was too clever not to leave). So I trotted off to wikipedia to read about fallen angels. During the late Second Temple period, demons were not thought of as the fallen angels themselves, but as the surviving so...

Re: Lon Milo DuQuette: The Man We Want to Hang With
Further to what Lon says about Satan, I would also like to register a complaint about that ridiculous concept. I should add that the tarot, which only has only one card, The Devil (XV), out of 78 cards remotely associated with the idea, and he(?) is a ridiculous figure with fake breasts, fake penis...

Re: Meditations on the Tarot (book) and the difference between Hermeticism and Christian Hermeticism
Yeah, perennialists and capital T traditionalists, who claim all religions as having an underlying unity, or, more specifically, as having a single philosophy underpinning them, are often criticized for being nothing more than a bunch of Occultists foisting their views onto every religion they come...

Re: Meditations on the Tarot (book) and the difference between Hermeticism and Christian Hermeticism
Can I just add that my mother had a very, very bad experience going to a Catholic girls school as a Protestant. The school was run by Irish nuns who sounded beyond vindictive and mean spirited. Not all of them, but most. This kind of thing colors people's views.

Re: Meditations on the Tarot (book) and the difference between Hermeticism and Christian Hermeticism
But still, I'm not certain that there's much gnosticism there. At least, it's not apparent to me in the Meditations on the Tarot. Which is my main reference as regards Christian Hermeticism and it seems that Tomberg more or less incarnates it. Not Meditations specifically, Hermeticism in general an...
